Split-cane fishing rods
Specialist Pure Silk Thread suppliers, PIPERS SILKS
Split-cane fishing rods provide another use for our Twisted Gloss Silks.  We have many rod builders who use our silks for whipping split-cane rods in traditional shades. The floss silks are also used to make flies for fly-fishing.

The silks most commonly used in the restoration or building of split cane fishing rods are:

4/20 Twisted Silk - fine thread

A fine silk which is not too bulky and lies flat. It is used for intermediate whippings.

90/2 Twisted Gloss Silk - medium thread

A medium silk thread which can be used for whipping rod rings.

90/3 Twisted Gloss Silk - thick thread

A thicker silk thread which can be used for whipping ferrules and rod rings on heavier rods.

The above silks are available in traditional shades

Floss Silks are used for fly-tying - see whole colour range

"The 90/2 can be used on sea fishing rods and on landing nets and wading staffs.

The 90/3 can be used on larger rods, nets and wading staffs."

Barry Grantham: Rod Builder

The 4/20 is good for intermediate whippings.

It lies nice and flat and is not too bulky.  The 90/2 is good for whipping rod rings and the 90/3 for whipping ferrules and rod rings on heavier rods.
